Siegfried hat es Heinz etwas übel genommen, als er wegen seines neuen Hundes letzte Woche ausgesetzt hat. Und jetzt ist Heinz auch noch am Gewinnen. Siegfried lässt sich frustriert in seinen Sessel fallen und sucht Ernas Blick, um nach einem Kaffee zu fragen. Nach einer weiteren gewonnenen Partie strahlt Heinz förmlich vor Glück und tetschelt liebevoll Kerchens Rücken, während dieser schläfrig und zufrieden unter seinem Stuhl hächelt. Ich gehe übrigens langsam davon aus, dass der Hund wirklich so heißt, denn ich habe Heinz immer noch keinen richtigen Hundennamen sagen hören. Abgesehen von den fünf Herren ist es heute nicht so voll und somit habe ich Zeit, die verstopfte Kaffeemaschine zu putzen. Gerade als ich die nötigen Teile auseinander genommen habe, kommen zwei Jugendliche herein und besetzen den Fenstertisch mit ihren Taschen. Ich schaue sie entschuldigend und voller Kaffeeresten am Arm an und frage sie, ob es denn auch eine heiße Schokolade tut. Sie nicken begeistert und setzen sich plaudernd an ihre Fensterplätze. Vom Herrentisch ertönt ein neuer Ausruf, eine Mischung der Freude und Empörung, als Heinz die nächste Runde gewinnt und das heutige Spiel beendet. Zum Trost bestellen sich alle eine Erfrischung und wechseln rasch das Thema zu den gestrigen Nachrichten, während Siegfried niedergeschlagen die Karten einpackt. Am großen Familientisch, at the big family table, and what is it they're playing? Kanaster, a card game. Yes, have you ever played Kanaster? I've not. I played it quite a lot when I was younger with my parents. It takes a long while, but it's a good game. It's a good game. It's a good game. It's a good game. It's a good game. It's a good game. So if you say at the start of the football training wir spielen uns erst ein bisschen ein, that's like we're warming up, we're playing a little bit back and forth. Okay, good. So although they're like a well practiced group, a well practiced troupe, sind nicht alle Mitglieder regelmäßig am Start. They're not... Do you remember that expression? Am Start sein. Is it to be, like to be present? It's kind of to be present and involved. And again, there's a great spotlight video about this whole expression and how to use it and when to use it. And I think we've seen it in maybe, I think in chapter two we came across it for the first time. So it's just like you're there, you're involved, you're excited, motivated. You're ready for it, right. So how would you explain that last sentence, that last part of the sentence? So not all of their members are there regularly or taking part regularly. Okay, so they're well practiced in what they're playing, but they're not always there. It's not always the same group of people. So some of their members come one week, but they don't come the other week. Okay, good. Siegfried and Heinz, however, sind aber die Säulen dieser Institution und sind deswegen auch schon seit langem die zwei besten Spieler. That's a good expression. Die Säulen dieser Institution. So what are die Säulen? The pillars. Oh, right. Okay, so Siegfried und Heinz, they are however the pillars of this institution. Und sind deswegen auch schon seit langem die zwei besten Spieler. And for a long time they have been the two best players? Yeah, genau. And it's another good example here that we see seit is used with a present tense in German, but you automatically translate it with a perfect tense in English. So here we say sind seit langem die besten Spieler. However, in English you say like have been the best players. Exactly. Siegfried hat es Heinz etwas übel genommen, als er wegen seines neuen Hundes letzte Woche ausgesetzt hat. Oh, right. So übel nehmen, what was that? To take something not well. So you might know like mir ist übel, like I'm not feeling well, I'm like feeling a bit sick. So if you take something not well of another person, you're kind of holding it against him. Right. So Siegfried hat es Heinz etwas übel genommen. So Siegfried is... He took it badly. Right. So he took it badly from Heinz, als er wegen seines neuen Hundes letzte Woche ausgesetzt hat. Oh, I see. Right. Did he not take part last week because of his new dog? Exactly. Ganz genau. And Siegfried wasn't pleased with him skipping a week. That's the verb aussetzen, is to skip. Right. Okay. At first I thought someone had sat on the dog. Und jetzt ist Heinz auch noch am Gewinnen. And now Heinz is winning. He's even winning. Exactly. So Siegfried is really not happy with this. First he skips a week and now he's winning after not being there last week. Not good. Siegfried lässt sich frustriert in seinen Sessel fallen und sucht Ernas Blick, um nach einem Kaffee zu fragen. Okay. So Siegfried lässt sich frustriert in seinen Sessel fallen. So he lets himself fall into his chair. Ja, perfekt. Und sucht Ernas Blick and tries to catch Ernas eye um nach einem Kaffee zu fragen to ask for a coffee. Perfekt übersetzt, ausgezeichnet. There's a lot of vocabulary in here, Thomas. Okay, let's kind of break it down. Nach einer weiteren gewonnenen Partie strahlt Heinz förmlich vor Glück. Glück ist Joy, es ist Glück. Strahlen. Ist das nicht so? Um zu wechseln? Um zu wechseln, um zu radieren. Oder wenn man es mit einer Person benutzt, kann man es so beamen. Also kann man es praktisch so wechseln, dass man sich so wechselt, dass man sich so wechselt, dass man sich so wechselt, dass man sich so wechselt, um zu beamen. Yeah, and he's panting to hecheln, is to pant. So, he's kind of lying there, a bit sleepy, but happy, and he's panting. His tongue's probably hanging out. Exactly. Okay. Right, so we're talking about the name of the dog here now, aren't we? Ich gehe übrigens langsam davon aus. So, übrigens is by the way. Yeah, and then it's a separable verb ausgehen. Is that like to, how do you say that, to come to the conclusion? Yeah, to assume. To assume, okay. So, I ... Oh, I see. Is it like, I'm slowly coming to the conclusion or slowly assuming? Starting to assume, but there's no starting in there. It's just like, slowly she has that assumption, dass der Hund wirklich so heißt. So, I'm beginning to think that the dogs really called that, Herrlchen. Ja, ganz genau. Denn ich habe Heinz immer noch keinen richtigen Hundenamen sagen hören, because I've still not heard Heinz use a real dog's name. Perfect. And again, this is a great example where we have to look at the end of that sentence part, where we see sagen hören to know that we've not heard Heinz say, and then we get all that information in the middle about the real dog's name. Building up the tension, waiting for the end of the sentence. Ganz genau, that's what German is all about. And that's what this podcast is all about. Yes, it's a little bit weird in this context I have to say because I would normally just say like they sit down at the table. Besetzen is something that I think of when I think about German tourists on holiday because that's the verb they use when they claim the sun lounges in the morning with their towels. Like sie besetzen die Sonnen liegen mit ihren Handtüchern. I am so glad you said that, Thomas. I would never say such a thing. I am so glad it was you that said that. So they claim their space at the window table mit ihren Taschen, with their bags. Yes, so maybe they just come in, they put their bags there and then they maybe move on to the counter to order something. Okay, no beach towels involved. No beach towels. Ich schaue sie entschuldigend und voller Kaffeeresten am Arm an und frage sie, ob es denn auch eine heiße Schokolade tut. Right. This is one of these many sentences where I kind of get the just, but I don't think I understand all the words. Ich schaue sie entschuldigend. I look at them like apologizing, apologetically. Apologetically, ja. And then we have the an. Ich schaue sie entschuldigend an. Of course. Right, that's where that an's coming from. Yeah, it belongs to the schauen. It's the brackets before it that really throw me. So I look at them both apologetically and with like coffee residue. Yes, that is a good word. I had a discussion with Katrina how to translate Kaffee Reste and it's like the left over ground coffee. Yes, which is very messy. It goes everywhere. It is. So it's like the pucks of coffee that you bash them out. So I look at them apologetically. Well, there are two descriptions of her. One is apologetically and the other is with the coffee residue over her arm. Genau. Und frage sie and ask them ob es denn auch eine heiße Schokolade tut. If a hot chocolate will do. Genau. So while chatting. Chattingly sounds really odd, but it's totally normal. And I hate saying this, but again, there's a good spotlight about participles. I've seen that one. That's what I was thinking. Quite often if they're doing two things at the same time, I think it's best to just translate it as like while chatting. While chatting. Okay, good. Vom Herren-Tisch ertönt ein neuer Ausruf. Eine Mischung der Freude und Empörung, als Heinz die nächste Runde gewinnt und das heutige Spiel beendet. Oh dear Siegfried, you're not going to be happy. So vom Herren-Tisch, so from the mains table, ertönt ein neuer Ausruf. They're in tones, a new exclamation. Tones, a new exclamation, that's perfect. So a new outcry is heard. Eine Mischung der Freude und Empörung. So a mix of joy and something. Empörung, yes. Outrage. Outrage, okay. Als Heinz die nächste Runde gewinnt und das heutige Spiel beendet. As Heinz wins the next round and ends today's game. Exactly. And you can see Runde, you can see Partie. They're both interchangeable words when you talk about card games. Good, okay.
